About Us Founded in 1994, the NC Albert Schweitzer Fellowship is one of thirteen currently active Schweitzer program sites across the U.S. dedicated to developing a pipeline of emerging professionals who enter the workforce with the skills and commitment necessary to address unmet health needs.

The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship immerses a select group of graduate students in an experiential learning and leadership development program designed to increase and sharpen their skills and abilities to more effectively address the health needs of underserved people.
The Fellowship is made possible by these schools, as well as the entities and individuals committed to sustaining the Schweitzer Fellowship program. These include: Under the leadership of Paul Abbey (Fellow 2016-17), Kristen Faucett (Fellow 2017-18) and Mollie Rischard Kimrey (Fellow 2018-19), several Fellows for Life are ongoing contributors to the Schweitzer Fellowship.
The Schweitzer Fellowship, which takes its name from a Nobel Peace Prize-winning physician and humanitarian, was established in 1940. Its fellows, primarily graduate students, spend a year spearheading projects to educate and address the healthcare needs of underserved or vulnerable populations — which can be defined by age, race, or socioeconomic status, depending on the project.

Each academic year Chapman University awards scholarships to university students in the name of Albert Schweitzer. These scholarships are offered through the generosity of the Marjorie Mosher Schmidt Foundation in honor of Valerie Scudder, former trustee of Chapman University.
